Noe in Kona

Noelani was a pleasant surprise during our last minute shoot in Kona, Hawaii. I had reached out initially to her friend Nondy's about getting together to shoot at some popular local spots. When we connected on the phone that day she asked if it was ok if her friend came along. Presumably as a chaperone to make sure I wasn't some sort of GWC creeper. I endorse this whole heartedly, bring a friend, bring your mom, bring your boyfriend, etc. I have one rule though, let your friend know they may end up holding light stands, reflectors, lugging gear, and other general assisting responsibilities. When she instructed me that her friend wanted to pose/model for some shots, and that she had some experience, I said "even better". Noe, from her own description, used to be a go-go dancer and was born and raised in Hawaii. She knew a great deal about the area and was extremely fun to work with. This is one of the images that she picked from our shoot and soon I'll be editing down my choices, but I always try to get the shots the subjects want first and foremost.

This was shot with a single SB800 on a stand, fired at 1/2 power with the SU commander. It was just to the left of me as the photographer following along the shoreline. It was probably 8' from me and roughly 5' away from the subject, firing down from the stand with it set wide open on the bulbs zoom setting. Post production performed in Photoshop which includes some skin smoothing, dodging and burning, and sharpening, with a little emulated tilt-shift blur on the fringes for effect.

I'm excited to show some of the other images captured with Noe, she was extremely expressive. Climbing on trees, laying out over sharp lava rocks, she brought a feather mask, and much more. Definitely an energetic spirit that I enjoyed working with.
