Because of the sheer size of shipping using the main channel into and out of Stockholm in the Archipelago, building bridges for land traffic is too costly. So car ferries are used where the communication route is vital.
Here (I believe!) is the car ferry from Stenslatten, which takes traffic across the channel to Oskar-Fredriksborg.
