Autumnal Equinox Sunset

Mount Washington | Press L to view in lightbox (must see large!)

Today's hike was at the north face of Mt. Washington. The climb was really steep. It felt like it was steeper than Mt. Si though it was only 2800 ft high. Well, the elevation gain was 1600 ft over 2 miles. It was brutal and thigh burning. And man, those Big Macs (again) really blocked the air passage ways.

We started hiking late. Thanks to me, we had to go get my telephoto lens at home before heading to the trailhead. Hey, I just wanted to shoot the Harvest Moon, that's all. We were about 1 mile in and I could see the colors already starting to appear which was really surprising on a cloudy day (didn't realize it was cloudy at the pass). The trail was getting steeper, but just had to double up the pace.

I gained a pretty good distance from the team (of 3). I got to a clearing and saw this gorgeous sun break. I was scrambling to take my camera from my pack. I also pulled out the filters and assembled my tele on the backup body. I was searching for my tripod next. It hit me right smack in the face -- I had to offload my tripod to Ryan. Crap!

Well, I was kind of glad I got to shoot without the filters this time. It somewhat broke the spell and reminded me I can still shoot a decent landscape photo without them.

OH, and there was no Harvest Moon! Darn those thick dark clouds.
