Methuselah Trees

Methuselah Trees

Like a Johnny Cash Song

I thought I’d been almost everywhere

Then I had the pleasure

Meeting an acquaintance with

4000 year old trees

They called me youngster, a kid

I listened and learned of their journeys

Across the millennia of time

High up in their mountain hideaway

10,000 feet and higher

They had some amazing views

Some across valleys and meadow

A distant view of Sierra Nevada

They'd been before indigenous people walked

Before the Europeans came seeking a new life

The stories they can tell to a youngster like me.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon while walking the Discovery Trail in the Schulman Grove of Inyo National Forest. The view is looking up a mountainside to the east with this one ancient bristlecone pine tree. My thinking in composing this image was to pull back on the focal length enough to capture not just this one lone tree, but also some of the surrounding landscape to add to the feeling present of grandeur and solitude. This mountainside setting is a little over 10,000 feet elevation.
