The power and the glory (Bob Grant)

1972 was the last full year of steam operation on the New South Wales Railways, with just under 100 steam locos still in service at the beginning of the year. And steam certainly went out in style.

Six of the AD60 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratts survived in service and these continued to double-head export coal trains from Newstan to Port Waratah, right up until the end of the year.

On 27 March 1972, 6029/6018 blast out of Fassifern with their loaded train, getting a good start to attack the 1 in 40 grades towards Newcastle.

A Bob Grant image.
