Apex Greenside
Near Blackhill, Transvaal, 4-8-0 no.2 was in use on trips between the Apex Greenside colliery and the transfer siding with the South African Railways - 9 July 1976.
Class 1 No.2 was originally built for the Natal Government Railway by North British in 1905 (works no. 16402).
By 1976 Class 1s were only to be found in industrial service - the rudimentary basics of this eight-coupled design were apparently followed through on all subsequent SAR designs.
