Old Exxon station, West Tucumcari NM 1970s re-creation

Station was located in the 1200 block of West Tucumcari Blvd. (Route 66) on the city's west side just east of the US 66-54 junction and next door to the former Ramada Inn, now the Tristar Inn Express.

Exxon station design changed very little in initial conversion from Enco in 1972, aside from new Exxon signs. Exxon Unleaded gasoline added at virtually all stations nationwide with red and white square ID around mid-1974 in time for 1975-model cars with catalytic converters requiring lead-free fuel. In certain markets were low-lead Exxon Plus was marketed as a mid-grade between Exxon Regular and Exxon Extra, Unleaded completely subplannted Plus, and at some smaller stations that had only two pumps and investment in a third tank and pump was not economically feasible, Unleaded replaced Extra altogether.

Here's what the now-vacant station looks like as of May, 2009: farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3499452670_9f2c48c8e1_b.jpg
