Alzheimer's a tightening grip

This is an image of my Mother a once lively, caring and vibrant lady who is now gripped by the debilitating disease of dementia. Until recently I knew very little about Alzheimer's but I now see what a terrible curse it is and the misery it can cause. The person that you know and love slowly recedes in to the distance leaving their body behind, a person you no longer know who no longer know's you.

I know if my Mum were able to communicate she would like these images to be used to help raise awareness for Alzheimer's.

The University of Oxford was recently asked to produce a report on the economic cost of dementia to the UK, and the country's investment in research to find new treatments, preventions and cures. Summary of the report can be read here www.dementia2010.org/reports/Dementia2010ExecSummary.pdf

The Oxford team's findings are astonishing. They show dementia to be the greatest medical challenge of our time.

•Over 820,000 people in the UK live with Alzheimer's and other dementia's.

•Dementia costs the UK economy £23 billion per year: more than cancer and heart disease combined.

•Dementia research is severely underfunded, receiving 12 times less support than cancer research.
