The Reality of Cats 8.3.14: Macy Gray conquers her nemesis

For the longest time this summer, a little chipmunk has been brazenly taunting Macy with its ability to evade her. She was very patient, however. She studied it, and failure to catch it didn't discourage her! Well, this past Sunday was a most interesting day for me. When I came to the porch first thing in the morning, I found her eating her latest kill. Honestly, I'm not quite sure what it was. It was on the small side, and could have been a field mouse, or a baby chipmunk. I only saw its underbelly. My immediate guess was the little chipmunk that we had discovered early in the summer. She had been studying it night and day. She would even stick around the house at night to watch out for it. I praised her for her catch. It was also the first time that I ever saw her eat her own prey! Unfortunately, by the time I came back with the iPhone, the carcass was totally ingested. I thought that I had missed my only opportunity to capture a kill of hers. Well, I was wrong. I found this guy on the road near the area of the stone wall where the chipmunk would hide. It seemed much bigger than the one I had discovered. The mother perhaps? Who knows. But I do know that either she or Percy, but probably she, had killed this one as well. A very productive early morning indeed! Patience is a virtue and definitely pays off in the end! She was very proud of herself.

Notice how the fur around the chipmunk's neck has been disturbed? That's where the cat dug its canines and how it killed its prey. Ever watch "Big Cat Diary" on Animal Planet? Invariably, that's how the big cats kill their prey as well. Or at least, that's the best place to do so. If such a move doesn't immediately kill them, it at least paralyzes them.
