Jason James at The Slipper Room in NYC 12.28.07

Jason James at The Slipper Room in NYC 12.28.07. You may notice the radical difference between this shot and previous "cleaner" shots of Jason. What's going on here? you may ask. Well, I'll tell you. I'm not a traditional painter. I'm not a traditional sketch artist. I'm a photographer, and I capture moments. However, sometimes I like to capture moments and make them look like paintings rather than straight-on photos. How do I achieve that? Through manipulation of aperture and shutter speed. But above all, NO FLASH. It takes much experimentation, patience, and perseverance. I split between conservative, safe shots because I didn't want to risk losing exciting moments. This way, I "hedged my bets". I also learned through experience over the years, that a photographer can't ever depend on a venue to provide optimal lighting conditions. That's where he/she has to get "creative" in order to achieve something special. And more often than not, the photographer doesn't gain prior access to venues. This is where live event photography and photojournalism greatly differ from studio photography. But this is why I also find it so exciting. It's just full of surprises! © Maria Dorothea Campbell 2007
