It was in the beginning of 17th century. Persian King Shah Abbas had Armenians come to Isfahan and they showed great talent for commercial and artistic activity. The name of Jolfa District in Isfahan comes from their hometown located near the border with Azerbaijan Republic. Armenians formed their own society based on Christian culture since Shah Abbas guaranteed them freedom of faith in the empire whose official religion was Islam.
