International Something

It seems that Japanese architecture likes the name such as international something.

The picture uploaded to my photo stream yesterday was stylish Tokyo International Forum and Today’s is “International Arcade” which is located a few hundreds meters away from the glass building of International Forum.

International Arcade is a shopping arcade that was built under very long railroad bridge for the famous bullet train Shinkansen, coinciding with Tokyo Olympic Games held fifty years ago.

My friends say the arcade aimed at acquiring foreign currency was lively at that time. The visitors, however, marked a sharp decrease since the Japanese Yen has strengthened.

Now almost all of the shops are shuttered and arcade is deserted as you see in this photo.

But who can imagine state-of-the-art Shinkansen runs on this old railroad bridge and luxury Imperial Hotel stands right near the hidden arcade.

Recently this “gap” in downtown Tokyo is becoming the most interesting matter in my photography and it is one of the main reason I started the project Stroll in Tokyo.
