The Franz Joseph Glacier & the Southern Alps

The Franz Josef Glacier has shrunk so much as it used to fill the gray area in the middle of the photo between the mountain ranges, which are the Southern Alps. The beige area in the bottom center of the photo is the mostly dry riverbed of the Waiho River, which varies in flow based on snow melt and rainfall (according to Wikipedia). Despite these challenges, it is still a very beautiful area that I feel fortunate to have visited.
