Reims, Saint-Remi basilica.
This magnificent 11-12th century basilica used to be the church of the benedictine abbey of Saint-Remi, situated south of Reims (now part of the city). The church was famous as the place where the Sainte Ampoule, cointaining the sacred oil to anoint the kings of France (a ceremony taking place in the nearby cathedral), was kept. It preserves the relics of Saint-Remi, the 6th century bishop who converted the pagan king of the Franks Clovis to Christianity, in fact the beginning of the association between the French monarchy and the Church. The Romanesque church of Saint-Remi was one of the largest in northern France.
