Ghent, St. Peters abbey on the Scheldt. Founded in the 7th century on the Blandijnberg, St. Peters became the most powerful abbey in medieval Ghent. Built on the banks of the river Scheldt, the current baroque church on the northside of the abbey, dates from the 17th century.
