Stubborn as Severus …

… Septimius Severus took over from his assassinated friend Pertinax, after defeating no less than 3 distinct – and distinguished – rivals.

 

He left a reputation as an effective ruler, although he turned Rome into even more of a military dictatorship, to the greater dismay of the surviving members of the Roman Senate.

 

After campaigning in Britain against the Caledonian tribes for unclear reasons, he died in York, reportedly leaving this telling last piece of advice to his sons: “Be harmonious, enrich the soldiers, scorn all others”.
