The Sint-Jorisdoelen is a former militia court on the Balans in Middelburg. The original building from 1582 was completely destroyed during the city fire of 17 May 1940. In the period 1969-1970, the facade was rebuilt to the original design of 1582. This facade was flanked by two modern side wings. After being used as an office building, plans were announced at the end of 2019 to start using the building as a hotel.
The first mention of the presence of the Saint George archers' guild for the cross or foot arch in Middelburg dates from 1352. They owned a court near the Sint-Janskerk. This court was expropriated and demolished in 1541 by the Middelburg city council because of the construction of the Nieuwe Haven. In 1542 money was made available for the construction of a new court on the grounds of the beguinage. In 1582, the Sint-Jorisdoelen was built on the Balans, adjacent to the court. Over the years, the archers' guild transformed into a kind of brotherhood, which merged in 1764 with the Grote Sociëteit van Middelburg, and went under the name Confrérie Sint Joris. In 1766 adjustments were made to the building, with a second row of skylights being placed on the roof and the windows being changed from cross to sash windows. A new floor was built above the gate to the left of the building.
