Male Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

The duck "par excellence", the Mallard is probably the bird you imagine first if someone mentions having seen one. Originally the duck was widely domesticated particularly in farmyards ; wild, it remains common and widespread throughout Europe with striking nuances of green around its neck against a bright yellow bill making it look almost like it was coated with metallic paint..! It is covered in a dark purple-brown breast interrupted by its thin white collar making it probably one of the most recognisable of the Dabbling Duck family.
