Cog Railway
The mechanics of the cog railway allow it to continuously climb steep gradients up the mountain. The train uses a unique cog wheel that meshes with the tracks. The engine pushed the train car from behind. This photograph, taken at Sun of a Gun Hill, shows the 25% gradient that the train was capable of climbing.c. 1891. J.G.
