Annual Glasswort (Salicornia bigelovii) by Jan Reises

Annual Glasswort (Salicornia bigelovii):
This photo shows the plant's main form and its color change from yellow/green to red. This plant is highly salt-tolerant and can be found growing throughout Robinson Preserve's salterns and marshes. The plant absorbs water and stores it, along with the salt from the water, in its stems and leaves. Parts of the plants are edible -early settlers in Florida used ate these parts as a sort of pickle.
Flowers: tiny, white to yellow
Leaves/Stalks: long finger-like protrusions that are thick and vary in color from yellow to green to red
This type of glasswort has a taller, bushier form as opposed to the shorter, more sprawling form.
