cacophony
On my dawn walk this morning through Samson Park I was heading up the last hill before heading home when I heard a cacophony of birds that I could not recognise.
I could not work out what birds where making such a loud din or why.
I turned my camera to a video setting and started to film as I walked closer and closer towards where this loud din was coming from.
When I got closer I could see it was a very large group of Red Wattlebirds that were all flying in and out of a small Tuart tree.
I could not make out anything at first that these birds where focusing on.
My first thought was maybe it was a mating gathering but as I had not seen this kind of large scale frantic bird behaviour before so I doubted this as the reason.
I just stood there watching and wondering what was motivating this unusual behaviour.
When I turned off the video I moved further around the tree and from the other side I saw two little baby Owls looking down at me.
On further exploration of the branches higher up I saw these babies mother.
All three of them were just sitting there and not moving a feather as the very large number of Wattle birds continuously attempted to move them on their way.
Those three owls were going nowhere.
I was amazed at how many Wattle birds had united to move these predators out of their patch.
In the past I have seen a couple of birds chase other birds out of their areas but never seen such a large number uniting like this.
