Diagram 3…Instinct Brain

“Snakes and Ladders”-Resilience Guide

By Terri Turner

The instinct brain is the oldest part of our brains and its jobs have seen our entire human race for thousands and thousands of centuries be able to survive and claim victory over forces of nature to grow our societies into what we have today surrounding the entire planet.

But it is this same part of the human brain that saved us trillions of times over and over again that is now attempting to destroy everything our ancestors built and matured into.

It is urgent our children know how this brain works and get mastery over it and strengthen their super human power of choice to now through maturity and knowledge choose other ways to respond through our social, emotional and spiritual inner capacities.

When a bad feeling is experienced in the feeling/emotional brain it triggers an instant “snake” like slide down into our instinct brain which has us either fighting, running away, freezing or using negative inner attacks like passive aggressive responses.

The instinct brains dominate learning style is action/doing and when the child is asked a question their eyes will look downwards (right brain dominate will look mainly to the right; left brain dominate will look mainly to the left; straight ahead looking down indicates a balanced action/doing brain style using both sides of the brain to think).

These children have to be doing/actions while you talk to them otherwise they find it very difficult to actually hear you when standing or sitting still (whistles are great for these kinds of learners because they hear through the vibrations throughout their body). These children need different support to learn to develop their visual/feeling and auditory learning capacities.
