Power of the Body Knowing its Mind…
“Snakes and Ladders”-Resilience Guide
The next book I found on an airport bookshelf was “How the Body Knows Its Mind: The Surprising Power of the Physical Environment to Influence How You Think and Feel” by Sian Beilock.
There were many aspects of this book I found very well researched and a lot of confirmations but it was the overarching new knowledge around the science of the way the brain was working that inspired my creative soul.
Many years ago when I first learned about the main learning styles (Auditory, Visual, and Kinaesthetic) and the main functions of the right and left sides of the brain these areas of science where all very new and revolutionary.
After reading “How the Body Knows Its Mind” I realised that the science around the way the mind/brain was working was still revealing amazing new realities that I knew I needed to learn more about.
With everything I was able to offer the children, who were in crisis in front of me, I still had not found enough to allow them to fly freely. There had to be more than waiting for them to be in crises.
There had to be more than rocking up week after week where the children were only failing again and again and me stepping in to offer support and help them up and out of the negative pits they had fallen into over and over again that they were finding themselves in.
No; I was not going to be happy with that outcome as all I could offer the next generation.
Beautiful young souls struggling for one personal reason or another desperate for answers to questions they could not even understand to ask.
Children full of potentials being cut off at the knees unable to find ways out of predefined societal created hell holes many generations before them had fallen into and lived perpetual despair like a bleak and negative "Neverending Story".
No; there had to be more that could be found to help this generation to be free of traumas that were not of their makings, not in their control, not even in the control of their parents or even grandparents generations.
Falling short of me going and getting trained in many varied professions that the adult generation was using to free themselves of the negative results of what these children were trying to get free of before they got older I could see no answer but my heart knew out there there had to be an answer I simply had not found it yet.
There had to be ways the children could get rid of the trauma patterns that they themselves could learn and use whenever they needed and not be dependent on me or anyone else when they found themselves in a scary place or experience.
It was then that I stumbled across Peter Levine and all his 40 odd years working with and around trauma that I finally found what I was looking for.
Finally I could see what was missing and all I then needed to do again was figure out how to simplify his science down into child size bites and the cards with the “Snakes and Ladders” concepts were created working alongside those beautiful and truly amazing young children I have been so very blessed to serve over the past 8 years.
That was the easy part.
Now I have to find ways to let the adult population know “What the Children Taught me"; not for my benefit but for the benefit of every child who is not growing up in a safe and secure world.
