Australian Christmas Spider

Austracantha minax

These community living spiders were always loved by us children many years ago as they were our first sign that Christmas and our long holidays were about to happen…but when the Government around the middle 1960’s in Western Australia chose to spray Dieldrin all over the metro area, (to kill off these tiny pesky ants) these little spiders and many other native insects and entire bird population disappeared…only 15 years after Dieldrin was band completely from being sprayed in Western Australia did the bird and insect population start to return (ants included) so for over 35 years all Western Australians lived with Dieldrin and not the beauty of the native bird and insect populations…

what is very exciting for me now is they are all returning…so you can image my excitement when I came across this community of Christmas spiders in my local bush park….
