Diagram 4…how to build ladders

“Snakes and Ladders”-Resilience Guide

We now know why we fall down into the instinct brain and what the outcomes can be so now let’s explore ways to get out of or stop ourselves from “snake” like sliding down in the first place.

To start with the child even knowing all this information and fully grasping its importance the old learned pathways in the human brain are going to take a little time to grow over and stop being available as we slowly create and forge new pathways.

Patience, compassion and tolerance are going to be needed here while the child takes time using all the opportunities being presented to achieve the new goals.

It is one thing to hear and understand knowledge it is another thing entirely to apply especially when you are a child.

When we find ourselves sliding down or seeing our self acting out the instinct brains ancient survival traits of either fighting, running away, freezing or passive-aggression we have to do two things very quickly to build a ladder back up to the thinking brain.

Those two main actions I have learned and trialled with many children and seen amazing results are;

1x ASK QUESTIONS & and SHAKE OFF BAD FEELINGS.

The act of asking a question creates a ladder straight up to the thinking brain and out of the instinct brain. The bad feelings that got us sliding down that snake in the first place needs to be felt and then literally “Shaken Off”.
