Looking for winter

A talented photographer @mark_littlejohn was bemoaning the fact that he was leaving his beloved Scotland to do a workshop in Cumbria, just as a heavy coating of snow was forecast. I get his frustration there has been lack of the white stuff this winter. To lessen his chagrin I pointed out there was snow forecast for cumbria on Thursday as well, as I was planning to dash over to get my a winter fix. On that note I set off early yesterday packing my crampons and iceaxe hoping for a snow day. Driving through a few flurries as I drove west I parked at NT car park just before Dockray. Leaving the iceaxe in the car as I could see it was pointless I headed through Glencoyne Park hoping for some photography opportunities I made my way over Brown hills to Hart Side and eventually to Sheffield Pike. This photo is looking towards Kirkstone Pass from the flanks of Stybarrow Dodd and is typical of the scenes from the tops for the day. The winds on the fell top was strong and biting, and when not snowing it was blowing the new snow which had fallen as ice pellets in the strong gusty winds. I could have done with goggles rather than the crampons which were humped around all day never leaving the bag. I’m sure my pack is getting heavier the older I get and I didn’t half feel it by the end of the day, four years ago I climbed up here with this sack full as I camped on Sheffield Pike for the night to get some dawn photos along Ullswater, I honestly think my days of hauling a pack of that weight are numbered. I’d come looking for winter and although not to experience epic snowy mountains of winters past I still found enough to give a contented smile last night watching the TV last night.
