Mango Flowers

Flowers of a mango tree in bloom. Location: Kollam, Kerala. In Malayalam, trees have names and fruit names are derived by adding the word fruit kai, phalam or pazham to the tree name (as opposed to fruits having a name in english, and the tree name derived from the fruit). In this case the tree is maavu and the fruitname is manga, shortened from maavin-kai. The english name mango is derived from this name or from Tamil mangai.

The tree has the botanical name "Mangifera Indica" in the Anacardiaceae family (cashew, pistachio, ...) and has various other names in India, like:

Vasantaduta (messenger of spring)

Madhuduta (messenger of fragrance),

Kamang ( embodiment of Cupid)

Kokilavasa (abode of cuckoos)

Kamavallabha ( the amorous)

The tropical fruit is called the "King of Fruits" in India. The tree has been around for more than 4000 years in India and was taken to South America by the Portugese, other parts of South Asia by Indians and to other tropical regions by others. There are about 35 species of Mango and most of them grow to a height of 10 to 40m.In addition to providing a delicious fruit, the unripe mango is used in curries, chutneys and salads, and the seed kernels, seed fat, bark, gum and the wood are useful.
