Dal Lake, Srinagar

Shikaras (ornamental boats) on the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the capital of the state of Jammu & Kashmir, India. In the background are the Zabarwan Mountain ranges which provide a magnificent backdrop to the beautiful city of Srinagar and Dal Lake. The highest point in the Zabarwan ranges is the Mahadev Peak (13,011 feet)

Dal is a freshwater lake and is integral to tourism and recreation in the Kashmir valley. It is also an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting. The shoreline of the lake, about 15.5 kms, is encompassed by a boulevard lined with several Mughal era gardens, parks, houseboats and hotels. The lake covers an area of 18 sq.kms and is part of a natural wetland which covers 21,1 sq.kms including floating gardens. The floating gardens, known as "Raad" in Kashmiri, blossom with lotus flowers during July and August.

A Shikara ride is a must on a trip to Srinagar and we spent a dreamy couple of hours one afternoon on this beautiful lake. As you sit back and enjoy your ride, floating shops come alongside and you can buy anything from local saffron, Kahwa (Kashmiri tea) , silver trinkets or even succulent kebabs.:-)
