Lake Palace, Udaipur

The Lake Palace was built between 1743 and 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh of the royal dynasty of Mewar in Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan in India.It is located on the island of Jag Niwas in Lake Pichola.Its natural foundation spans 4 acres and it is built of white marble. The exquisite palace was used as a summer retreat by the royal family of Udaipur.

The palace gradually fell into decay towards the latter half of the 19th and early 20th century.In the 1960s it was converted into a luxury hotel by Bhagat Singh, the then head of the royal family of Udaipur. in 1971, Taj hotels Resorts and Palaces took over the management of the hotel.

The Lake Palace is one of the most luxurious hotels in India.Former guests include Vivien Leigh, the Shah of Iran and Jacqueline Kennedy. The hotel has been used as a location for several films including the James Bond movie Octopussy.
