Come the month of Ashwina (Sept-Oct) in the Bengali calender and the Goddess Durga arrives in Bengal.The soft fragrance of the Shiuli flower perfumes the air and the whole state resounds to the sound of Dhak as Bengalis celebrate Durga Pujo..Beautiful clay idols of Goddess Durga are placed in gorgeous pandals and worshipped, the festivities lasting for five days..The Goddess is depicted as slaying the evil demon Mahishashura symbolizing the victory of good over evil.On thelast day of Vijayadashami the idols are taken out in a procession and immersed in rivers and other water bodies.

Now Durga Pujo is celebrated by Bengalis all over the world.

In Kolkata the idols are traditionally made in the locality of Kumartuli (Kumar-one who works with clay)
