Sanchi Stupa- Maybe worth a look in large
On a recent visit to Bhopal to attend a conference I got an opportunity to see the famous Sanchi Stupa,a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Sanchi Stupa is the oldest stone structure in India.Stupas are large hemispherical stuctures with a central chamber in which relics of the Buddha were placed. The Sanchi Stupa was originally commissioned by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka the Great in 3rd century B.C.The original brick structure was covered by stone during the Shunga period. The balustrade and the four beautiful carved gateways were added during the Satavahana period. The intricate carvings on the gateways show scenes from the life of Buddha integrated with everyday events that would make it easier for people to understand the Buddhist creed as relevant to their lives.Buddha has been depicted as a tree or other inanimate symbols.
The site of Sanchi was discovered by an Englishman General Taylor in 1818.
I was without my camera on this trip and had to make do with my phone.:-)
