Today, we celebrate Midsummer in Sweden

In Sweden midsummer day, weekend day, since 1953 a movable holiday and falls on Saturday between 20 and 26 June.

Midsummer is perhaps the most important festival in Sweden, at the side of the Christmas. Midsummer, and midsummer pole, goes back to a very old celebration of the summer and vegetation. But midsummer also meant a break point in the working year of peasant society. The day was originally celebrated to honor Saint John the Baptist, a relationship that has become increasingly distant. Midsummer night was considered full of magical powers and supernatural beings.

Herring is still evident at this season, even if it now gets the competitive position of the grill. The tradition of herring and potatoes grew during the 1900s and at midsummer keeps matjessillen its position. Some brands of pickled herring has half of its annual sales to midsummer. The strawberries keep their position. When they came to Sweden in the late 1700s called the pineapple strawberry because of its Latin name ananassa.
