I told the border patrol officer I was curious to see what all the fuss was about. He looked at my NH license and explained "Canadians are not as troublesome as Mexicans." I half nodded and held my tongue about his racism. I doubt I would have had it as easy if I wasn't a pink-faced redhead, and I'm ashamed I didn't confront the racism that I benefitted from in that moment.
