Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

A Roman Catholic basilica, it is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Dominating Montmarte (highest point in the city) and visible from a long way off, it is one of Paris' landmarks. After the terrible years of war in 1870 and the of the Paris Commune, a promise was made to build a basilica which would be a place of pilgrimage. As the project was deemed to be of public interest, a competition was organised in 1873. It was won by Paul Abadie, and a national subscription launched to fund the project.
