The Royal Palace

The neoclassical Royal Palace on the west end of Dam Square, in the center of Amsterdam, was originally built to serve as a city hall for its magistrates. Opened in 1655, it was one of many candidates for the title of the Eighth Wonder of the World and it was for a long time the largest administrative building in Europe in those days.

The palace is now used mainly for entertaining and official functions, such as state visits, the Queen’s New Year receptions and other official receptions.
