Brandenburger Tor
The Brandenburg Gate is a Viktorian four-horse chariot on top and five passages (a work by the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow) at ground level marks the center of the city of the state. It is a symbol for both Berlin and for Germany as a whole, opening up the way to the west and providing access to the routes to the east.
They tore down the Berlin wall and most of the frontier between East and West Germany evaporated -- seemingly overnight. In their enthusiasm, they damaged the gate and its statue on New Year's Eve 1989. The East Berlin restored the gate, while West Berlin recast the Quadriga from its original molds.
