Mondsee Cathedral

The church's interiors.

Mondsee Cathedral was once the heart of an important monastery and was founded in 748 A.D. on the ruins of a Roman settlement. It influenced the culture of the Salzkammergut for more than thousand years.

The oldest German translation of the Bible was written here - the Mondsee Matthew.

The pompous, baroque interior decoration was affected by the painter and sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler (1649-1723). Nowadays the Mondsee Cathedral is one of the most important art treasures of Austria because it is one of the oldest collegiate church. 2005 Mondsee Cathedral received the title of a papal Basilika minor.

The wedding scene of the movie The Sound of Music was filmed here. Maria (Julie Andrews), led by Liesl, walked down the aisle to meet the Baron (Christopher Plummer) in front of the main altar. (I looove that movie!)
