What makes birds sing?

I just don't know but Jonathan Safran Foer says this in his book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close :

Our laughter kept the feathers in the air. I thought about birds. Could they fly is there wasn't someone, somewhere, laughing?"

maybe ours laughs made them sing , too.
