Scania 6x4 Work In Progress

In March I hope to attend a model day in Ede in the Netherlands, joining other members of LowLUG (a Dutch LEGO Users Group). The models on display, including our LEGO models, are supposed to be trucks and construction vehicles. I already have a few of those, but felt it would be fun to have something new as well. After some deliberations I decided that I want a truck with a step-frame trailer and some sort of construction vehicle as a load -most likely a backhoe loader.

This is obviously the tractor for the whole thing. When I was building my Scania recovery truck about half a year ago, I realised that I'd constructed the cab such that I could use its design as the basis for a more standard-looking Scania (with a grey grille) without too much difficulty and that is what I am doing for this. Unlike the recovery truck, however, the cab on this truck can be tilted.

I am specifically going for a far less elaborately decorated truck than most of the others I've built so far. This is supposed to be a workhorse. To make it interesting I decided to add a crane behind the cab. This is not an uncommon feature on trucks like this. The truck also has working flashing lights on top of the cab, using LEGO's old 9V Light & Sound system. The battery box is built into the back of the cab.

The truck is nearly done. I am waiting for a bricklink order to arrive that includes a crane boom in black, need to add a few details to the engine and intend to make a few small stickers. I am also still considering adding a narrow stripe to the side of the cab, but that's as far as decoration will go.

After that it'll be time for the trailer.
