Library Takeover 2024: Pop-Up Portraits | Portrait of Northside Community
Through the Library Takeover program(link is external) at Madison Public Library, four artists--Michelle Kelley, Maria Schirmer Devitt, Savannah Starlin, and Christina Theobald--have come together to transform the library into a professional photo studio with the goal of helping people see themselves more fully reflected in their community.
On Saturday, November 30, the community was invited to explore themes of self-love and self-empowerment through portraiture during a Pop-Up Portrait and community mural event taking place from 11am -3pm at Lakeview Library [2845 N Sherman Ave].
During "A Mirror of Northside Community" , local artist Maria Schirmer-Devitt offered a chance for the Northside of Madison to come together to engage with a mirror mural. Through prompts and questions designed to encourage positive reflection, the group strove to build community.
Together attendees wrote messages on a large mirror answering questions such as:
How do you want to be seen?
What makes you unique?
What beauty do you see in the people around you?
They also gave away small, personalized mirrors for participants to take home as a reminder to love themselves.
Light snacks and refreshments were also available throughout the event.
Pop-Up Portraits
Our team of creatives built a beautifully designed set within the community room at Lakeview Library where family/friends/chosen family could sign up to receive a professional, 40-minute photo-shoot experience, including hair and makeup.
This event is part of the Library Takeover program. Library Takeover is funded by Madison Public Library Foundation and TruStage.
