Gopher Tortoise

Found this little guy (or girl) while walking the trail in the Hypoluxo Scrub Area. He seemed fairly unconcerned about us invading his habitat. This was the best I could do while trying to shoot at a low angle against bright while sand while keeping a respectful distance, being bitten by ants and listening to Steve teasing me about molesting the local wildlife.

Gopher tortoises can be found throughout the state of Florida. They grow to be slightly less than one foot long and weigh about 9 pounds. They dig their burrows in dry habitats and have chiseled looking front feet for digging and elephant like hind legs.

The Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area comprises 97-acres of protected scrub and flatwood land in Hypoluxo, Florida located on Hypoluxo Road and US 1. The name Hypoluxo comes from the native Seminole and roughly translates as "water all around—no get out".
