Southern Gray-cheeked Salamander

A large Plethodon metcalfi from Transylvania County, North Carolina. P. metcalfi is one of four species of "gray-cheeked" salamanders within the Plethodon jordani complex. These four species appear essentially identical, and are best separated by range. This individual was found beneath a log in the middle of a patch of pink lady's slippers.
