A Penchant for Spring

In truth my favorite season is usually the one that I'm currently immersed in, but spring really does hold a special place in my heart. It' has come early to the forests of east Texas this year, and many spring wildflowers are already blooming and deciduous tree leaves are already breaking bud.

With all that comes with welcoming a new tiny human into one's life, I haven't had much occasion to get out and shoot, but this day I was fortunate as we explored the nearby Davy Crockett National Forest and I caught a lovely male Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) singing from the blossom-laden boughs of an eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis). People are often surprised when I tell them that the redbud is a member of the pea family (Fabaceae), but the flower structure is a dead giveaway, and I was even lucky enough to capture a few of last years pods still hanging from the branch.
