19940807 Ždiar, Gorale dwellings
Diary page, sunday august 7 1994.
No time for a proper drawing, so just some quick impressions from memory of the wooden dwellings we saw around Ždiar, the main settlement in the White Tatra (Belianske Tatry), near the Polish border.
This area is inhabited by the originally Polish Gorale (Highlanders); people, an ethnic minority with a rich folk tradition (architecture, costumes, music, folkdance).
The houses are sturdy and simple, and that is just what I like!
The construction is called blockwork or horizontal log construction; tree trunks are laid horzontally on top of each other.
The roofs are covered wit wooden shingles.
What we wrote in the diary:
"The drive to drive to Ždiar is beautiful. There in the hills we saw well conserved wooden houses, very cute. Windowframes painted red with several patterns (red background with white motives). Also blue , decorated windowframes. The houses are interesting because they have verandahs."
