Welcoming Party

Coastal Brown Bear Mother and First Year Cubs, Alaska

After being dropped off by the float plane I found myself in a lush green landscape with a crystal clear rivers, pollution free air, St. Augustine volcano off in the distance, the closest road or power lines a 100 miles away and everything was absolutely picture perfect pristine and felt untouched by man….it was my idea of a paradise.

THEN less than an hour after arriving, this beautiful female and her two cubs came by camp to welcome us. It was heart-poundingly amazing, almost surreal.

John and I didn’t know what to expect going into this adventure but any anxieties about the time or money invested to get there were swept away when we saw her. We knew we were in a very special place.

She instantly became one of my favorite bears and she ended up being the first and last bear I photographed while in Alaska.

I went on this trip with my friend John Blumenkamp. He’s an excellent photographer and an even better human being. If you aren’t following him, you should. You can find him at TetonTrail.com.
