Like many urban centers throughout the U.S., Downtown Miami has been a veritable dead zone for quite a few years. Traditionally abandoned by the upwardly mobile in their search for greener pasture, more square footage, and impressive curb appeal, many Downtowns were quickly seized by those with less impressive bank accounts.
However, like other urban centers, Downtown Miami has seen a revitalization in recent years and developers have erected many, many new high rises. Miami still lags behind other city centers and the desired clientele has, thus far, proven to be rather reluctant to move in.
The area has certainly improved and I felt more than comfortable walking around - but I am a city dweller who feels comfortable walking around South Central L.A. or Spanish Harlem (even in the late 1980's). Thus, Downtown Miami certainly had nothing intimidating about it - at least as long as the sun was up....
