The famous Flying Scotsman locomotive travelling south along the Settle to Carlisle railway to York last weekend. This is possibly the most well-known steam train in the world, and has toured extensively in the UK as well as Canada and Australia. The locomotive was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and constructed at Doncaster Works in 1923.
Here, the engine is seen crossing the beautiful Arten Gill Viaduct in Dentdale. This is my favourite location to photograph the Settle-Carlisle railway as it offers so many different viewpoints and compositions. The structure, constructed between 1871 & 1875 from local marble, has 11 arches and stands 117 ft high - therefore being the second tallest viaduct on the whole line.
