Yellow Swarming Flies (Thaumatomyia notata)
There were clouds of these small flies in the garden recently. They are Thaumatomyia notata, a species of "frit flies". These were eating pollen on the crocuses and "socialising" on the ivy. There were at least 15 of them, probably many more. ID confirmed by Chloropid experts John and Barbara Ismay.
