Happy 500 yr old Window Wednesday!
500 year old glass in St Mary's Church in Saffron Walden, said to be Margaret of Anjou, the power behind the throne of King Henry VI. Henry became king at the age of nine months. He was said to be peaceful, pious, benevolent but in later life developed a serious mental illness. He wasn't really up to ruling a country at a time of war. Queen Margaret was known as a stunning beauty. She was 15 when they married; he was 23. She did her best to lead the Lancastrians during the Wars of the Roses, but lost and was taken prisoner, ransomed back to France by her cousin King Louis XI where she lived until her death at the age of 52. The church is enormous, the largest in Essex... and to think it was paid for by the great wealth generated by saffron crocuses!
