3. Pub Sign: Princess of Wales

In 1785, before he was crowned King George IV, the Prince Regent illegally and secretly married Maria Fitzherbert. She was a commoner, six years his elder, twice widowed, and a Roman Catholic. He remained attached to Maria until her death despite being forced to (legally) marry his cousin. This pub in Villiers Street, London, was named in memory of Maria, the unofficial Princess of Wales of her day.
